A Muslim servant always needs His Lord, if he raised his hands in supplication for all his life; his requests are more than his short life. We need many things in this worldly life; as to worship, work, home, health, offspring, wealth, and relationships for ourselves, and our dear ones and we wish the goodness for our nations and so on. While on the other hand, for the other life, we need relief from distresses of grave hardships, resurrection, balance of deeds, path, and all other difficulties we experience in the hereafter. All these things need supplication from the servant to Allah to lift hardships from him and to endow upon him the goodness both in the worldly life and the hereafter.
If we contemplate, we would find that words whatsoever are not sufficient for our requests from Allah; therefore, there is a sunnah from the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, who informs from Allah, by supplication using comprehensive duaa. In this regard, ibn Mahjah reported on the authority of `Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet, pbuh, taught her the following supplication: (O Allah! I beseech You to grant me the good at the present and in the future which I know and which I know not, and I take refuge in You from the evil at the present and in the future which I know and I know not. O Allah! I beseech You to grant me that which Your Servant and Prophet asked You, and I take refuge in You from that which Your Servant and Prophet and take refuge in You from that which Your Servant and Prophet took refuge in You from. O Allah! I beseech You to grant paradise and what makes me admitted to it of words or verbs, and I take refuge in You from hellfire and what approaches to it from words or verbs. O Allah! I beseech You to decree beneficial destiny for me always).
We should memorize this comprehensive supplication which the Prophet taught lady `Aishah.
